Flower of the week: Alstroemeria

Alstromeria is the perfect flower for a busy urban girl! a) It is cheap. You can get a bundle at Safeway for $4. b) It is long lasting. A typical arrangement can last up to 3 weeks without wilting. c) It comes in cool colors. Alstromeria range from white to dark purple. Here are a few more facts about this week’s flower:

Alstromeria is also known as a Peruvian Lily or Incan Lily. The South American seeds were originally collected by Swedish botanist Baron Clas von Alstroemer in 1753, hence the name. The plant grows well in Southern California and other warm climates. Victorians considered Alstromeria to represent feelings of aspiration and devotion. Wonderful! I just picked up a bunch of the peach variety last night for the center of the dining room table.
