Inspiration: Marc Jacobs China

Inspiration: Marc Jacobs China

Why do so many modern china patterns fall into one of two categories: boring or bizarre? I’ve been to Replacements and to the porcelain room at the Legion of Honor, I know that there used to be some gorgeous china patterns.

Luckily, there is hope in the name of designer china collections. Kate Spade’s designs are fun, Jasper Conran always does well with Wedgwood and I just discovered Marc Jacobs for Waterford.

It’s exactly my taste, but you could set one fabulous table with the David dinnerware in red, yellow or blue. Zoom in on the photo to get a closer look at the detailed pattern.

What’s your favorite china pattern?

I’m partial to transferware. I grew up on my parents’ blue Myotts Country Life, and recently my mom gave me the full set. My own wedding china is a lot simpler and a lot more modern, but it just brings back such great memories of Friday night dinner parties to use the transferware.

    Blue Flower ~Royal Copenhagen

I love china though and really like many other patterns as well.

I have a couple transferware plates in Iris by Royal Staffordshire that I love. They’re from the discount room at Replacements.

I inherited my grandmother’s china and I truly love it – understated but beautiful. It’s Noritake’s Whitehall

A white on white pattern with two plantinum bands.

I imagine if I decide to register for “my own” set when I get married I would pick something more modern (I love Kate Spade’s china) but I’m really glad that I have a set that’s so classic.

I have the Louvre collection from Bernardaud and I LOVE it. It is all white, with different architectural details from the Louvre on the plates, servingware, etc. Since it is white, I have endless options as far as table linens, flowers, etc.

Proper china is too delicate for me as I tend to break dishes and the like. My personal favorite is anything handmade by an artist. So, I have quite a few pieces from a fantastic artist from Berkeley. Here is a link to my dishes from Rikki Gill: http://www.rikkigillceramics.com – then go to place setting – blue and red line.

My everyday pattern is Casa Look by Villeroy and Boch (now discontinued). I just love it!

Initially, “Gwinnett Lane Crème” Collection by Kate Spade got my vote even if Mark Jacobs David’s line looks amazing. It is classier than Gwinnett Lane Crème but I will buy Kate Spade because it goes to the dishwasher.

Then I saw the winner: “June Lane” Dinnerware Collection by Kate Spade. The pattern is as chic as Marc Jacobs with the added bonus of being dishwasher and microwave safe. In fact, this is the one I will go for. Select the gold or the platinum finish to complement the rest of your decor.
