What to Wear: Lean

What to Wear: Lean

Kathi has done a lot of thinking about her style dilemma :

I’m a borderline “petite” 5’4″ mom of 2 (2 1/2 and 5 yrs old), 38 years old and I’ve lost my fashion way (I’m a pretty good editor, I know what I like when its on me, but not terrific about coming up with an outfit, let alone a wardrobe) and I find myself falling into the “mommy trap” of no-style easy clothes. Compounding my dilemma is a proportion “problem”. I’ve got really narrow shoulders, bust, and ribcage, with a bit of a bum.

Unfortunately, my desire to look long and lean by emphasizing my smaller top half, tends to make me look short–I’m rather longwaisted/short legged (don’t want to look frumpy or dumpy) and trying to make my legs look longer/me look taller tends to de-emphasize my thinner top and over do it with the bum focus. Help!

I’m an ICU nurse part time, so work clothes are not a priority, but I would like something beyond the t-shirt-fleece-jeans thing I’ve been doing lately. Any ideas for an outfit to jump-start my wardrobe??

I’m fair with auburn hair and hazel eyes (pale/pastel near my face tends to wash me out). I’d rather invest in some quality pieces that I can develop a “style” and work with and incorporate accessories to change seasons/years…Any advice you’ve got to offer would be really appreciated, I’d love to know how to look long, lean, and elegant in an easy (not trying too hard) way. How’s
that for a tough assignment?

Carmindy (from TLC) is the epitome of long and lean style in my book. Lots of soft volume, bright colors and long accessories. Let’s channel her look with a “mom” twist:

Boots – The width on these boots help give your legs a long, lean look. I have a really similar pair that I wear with everything. Make sure they go all the way up to your knees.
Top – A feminine way to wear something with a little volume and show off your collar bone. Machine washable.
Skirt – A chocolate pencil skirt is so versatile. Make sure it fits well and hits you right at the knee.
Earrings – Slim hoops.
Bag – Slinky from Urban Outfitters.
Bracelet – To accentuate thin wrists.

All these pieces are solid foundations to add to your wardrobe for years to come!
