To Do: Maidenhair Fern

To Do: Maidenhair Fern

I’m craving the bright green delicacy of maidenhair ferns for spring. I’ve killed – let’s say several – of these sensitive ferns in the past. I think if I keep this one in the bathroom where it is nice and steamy, it will survive longer than a few weeks.

God, I love maidenhair ferns. I seem to have a total black thumb, though, so I’ve stayed away because I hear they’re fussy. I have an amazing big matte black pot, though, that would look so amazing full of something along those lines… I have seen something called, I think, Baby’s Tears (?!!) that I need to investigate. Our bathroom isn’t big enough to add a plant to the mix.

Baby’s tears are pretty easy. Like ferns, they need indirect sun and lots of water. Keep it by your kitchen sink and you’ll remember to water more easily.

I’m a huge fern nut, and these delicate ones are some of my favorites. Just remember to clip the dead stems off and keep it moist with a spritzer and you should be ok (and singing in the shower might keep it happy, too!).

So beautiful! I am a sucker for ferns, but the only ones I’ve kept alive have been silk.

It might be a little too warm in your bathroom, from my experience. In SF, I’ve had excellent luck with north east exposure on the porch, and in very sheltered (no wind) locations that are cool and moist. =)
