What a Wonderful Town!
You can tell just how big a geek I am when I burst into musical numbers before traveling. For last November’s Paris trip, I had Bonjour Paris stuck in my head for a month. Now, a trip to New York has me singing New York, New York…which really can’t be done without some wild arm gestures.
Rob and I are going to NY for Memorial Day weekend, staying at the palatial apartment of a wealthy business acquaintance while he’s out of town. This our first vacation there since moving to San Francisco and I think it will be so different. The photo is from a trip a few years ago where we spent a whole day in Central Park.
I’ve done most of the tourist stops before, so this will be more relaxed. I’m thinking ABC Carpet and Home, shop for suits, the Staten Island Ferry and maybe the Met. Any other must-see recommendations?

you should go check out Uniqlo in SoHo. They have the best jeans and it’s just a cool store. In five years they’ll be all over like h & m but for now there is jut the one here in the U.S.

The Rubin Musuem (of Himalayan art) on 17th St. and 7th Ave. puts you right by all the bargain shopping (Filene’s Basement, TJ Maxx, Loehmann’s) plus it is close to ABC Carpet & Home and the rest of the shopping in Union Square – just keep walking downtown. The SoHo Prada – 575 Broadway at Prince. The architecture and design of the space is amazing to say nothing of the clothing! Molton Brown and Anna Sui are close by too.
The Met has a rooftop cocktail garden which is a lovely way to end the day.
A long walk through the LES and then across the Brooklyn Bridge is always fun–you could end with pizza at Grimaldi’s under the bridge or chocolate at Jacques Torres in DUMBO.
Sneak into the fancy Le Parker Meridian in midtown and eat a delish burger at Burger Joint, a totally fun dive hidden inside.
Head to PS1 in Queens.
Favorite restaurants: ‘ino for panini, Pearl Oyster Bar for seafood, Caselulla Wine and Cheese for cozy wine and (duh) cheese, the Red Cat, Gottino (wine bar-west village), the Bar Room at the Modern (in the MOMA).
Favorite cocktails/drinks: PDT–a secret bar inside a hot dog joint–you need a reservation, you can call at 3 pm the day of. Little Branch in West Village, Spuyten Duyvil in Brooklyn, Lorelei in Lower East Side, East Side Company Bar in Lower East Side.
Shows: Recently saw Boeing Boeing starring Christine Baranski and Bradley Whitford–hilarious. Also, I think Ethan Cohen’s play Almost an Evening is still playing off broadway–also fabulous!
walk/run/bike/blade down Riverside Park on the Hudson – it runs from the George Washington Bridge to Battery Park. Amazing view of the City and the water, very peaceful. There is also free kayaking at various docks on the weekends that should be underway by Memorial Weekend.
Also try Vosges chocolates in SoHo – so amazing!
So incredibly jealous. We were just there the beginning of February and I constantly wish I were still there. I’m thinking of going back same time next year if we can swing that and our down-payment savings.
I just watched Manhattan Saturday night, so I must suggest John’s on Bleeker St., Zabar’s, and the iconic, in my opinion, view of the Queenboro Bridge from 59th St.’s dead end.
