Another week loaded with work activities. I like going out…
Wedding Wednesday: Great Aunt
This photo is of my great aunt’s wedding (grandmother’s sister, is that right?). They had a ceremony and reception at home in Minneapolis over Christmas 1944. My famously elegant great grandmother, the original owner of the dress, is holding court on the left.
Aren’t they adorable? If you click on the photo you can see that they’re holding hands. My mother always comments that they look so “pleased with each other” – which is just right.
That’s the same amazing lace dress I wore at my wedding and that Jean will wear at her wedding.

This kind of family tradition is amazing… and what a photo! I think it’s incredible that you all have this dress to share.
There’s something so romantic about those old wedding photos–especially with the styles of the 40s.
Ok, I am fairly new to your blog and love it. But, 2 questions. Who is Jean (your sister?) and who is Margaret (a fried?)? Thanks, Sarah
Hi Sarah – you’ve got it right. Jean is my sister and Margaret is a friend who goes back to Junior High.
Is your great grandmother’s dress from this photo still around? That’s also a stunner!
I wish! I would love to have any of her clothes. She was the exact same size as me and had impeccable taste.
I love, love , love this photos and I think it is so cool that you each of you wore(or will wear) the dress.
Yesssss.
Yay. I do wish our wedding was this simple. We obviously went towards simple, but we could have gone even farther. Sigh. Lovely.
And yes, your grandmother’s sister. That is right. I have a delightful great aunt myself.
It goes to show how high the bar has been set these days. My great grandmother was super-fancy and well off and they still had the reception at home with the house decorated for the holidays.
I know… Our family too. Sigh. Well, it will be good to remember how many notches we reset the bar down, even if in the end we could have reset it even further. Right?
You great grandmother is the woman in the white dress? She looks uncannily like my grandmother. Are you my daughter? Oh. No. My daughter isn’t married yet….
That picture tells such a terrific story, multiple stories even. What a treasure (in addition to the dress!)
