Coveted: Chestnut Hill Pumps
Is is customary to celebrate leap day by being in a terrible mood? If so, I’m right on track. I spent all last night researching honeymoon spots only to have the devalued dollar or the weather thwart every plan.
The cheap warm places (Mexico, India, Thailand) will be in storm season. The cold places (Antartica, Alaska) will be too cold. Anything remotely associated with Europe is an exchange rate nightmare. Argentina and Costa Rica are lovely, but I’ve already been to both. Cairo and Morocco are in the lead.
All I want is to be able to go somewhere nice for a couple weeks without spending the same amount as the wedding cost itself. Arg. Stupid US economy.
Anywho…let’s get distracted with something pretty. These Kenneth Cole pumps seem so right for spring. You can tuck them under your best black work pants and enjoy flashing a bit of yellow. And that color scheme is so in right now. At $165, I think I’ll just covet them for now 🙂

I have some friends who just returned from Morocco and though they had a good time, they said there’s not much you *have* to see there. I think it’s supposed to be nicer than Cairo, though. Have you looked into Turkey? I think it’s still supposed to be inexpensive and there are a lot of active things to do. Also, I went to Japan last year and didn’t spend a fortune. Good luck!
Look into Buenos Aires, Emily. I’ve had several friends go over the last couple years, and they all say that it’s as beautiful as Europe but not as expensive, that things are very affordable, that there’s stuff to do nearby (patagonia, beach) and culture, and that it can be relaxing and is temperate. Spring and autumn are great times to go. Think sexy, sexy tango action!
Also, it has the benefit of not sending you into jet-lag city, being on a similar time-zone.

I have also heard great things about Buenos Aires, and the weather there should be nice in late September.
Re: Thailand, I think it’s possible to avoid monsoon season by staying towards the eastern side of the islands i.e. Ko Samui and points near there, rather than the Krabi/Phuket side.

We honeymooned in Kauai. It was gorgeous. 5 minutes drive to a mostly empty beach and there’s hiking,. scuba, snorkeling, outdoor markets and even fancy restaurants for when you feel like leaving the beach. We stayed with family but we had friends staying at the Hyatt that said it was not unreasonable and when we visited it was super swank (so it was really probably not very reasonable). But it basically doesn’t matter where you stay since the whole island is gorgeous.
Is New Zealand still out? We wanted to go there for our honeymoon, but we married in the summer so it didn’t make sense. You could ride bikes, shear sheep, and drink lots of wine 😉 And it should be spring so the weather would be not-so-bad.
I agree with the Turkey suggestion. the south west coast is lovely if you avoid the touristy spots. Try hiking from the abandoned Greek village of Kayakoy to Fethiye. It is an easy hike that will take take you through a greek ghost town, over a mountain and into the charming beach town of Fethiye on the Mediterranean. There is so much to do and see in that area. The food is amazing and if you choose to visit Istanbul – its a blast. And cheap. At least when I went 6 years ago.
i vote turkey, too. you say you want someplace “nice,” i hate to say it, but cairo is not that place.

I second the idea of Hawaii then. There is kayaking and hiking there, it doesn’t take very long to get there.
The last few times my parents have been they stayed at a bed and breakfast on a macademia nut farm. Less expensive than the giant hotels and they love the experience (they keep going back to the same place). You could email my mom for the details, I know she would be happy to share.

Turkey (if it’s affordable these days), or Chile? Great wine… on the west coast so it shouldn’t be stormy, and it will be warm…
In the end, just remember, you are going to enjoy your honeymoon no matter where you go. You’ll remember it as great time you spent together as newly weds. And hey, our generation has so many options that it should make us smile. My parents got married in SF, and they just went to Carmel for their honeymoon. But hey, they loved it. My boyfriends parents went to Tahoe, and also love it.
Turkey will blow your mind. We went there for our honeymoon and had such a wonderful time that it is the trip that we measure all others against, and we’ve been all over. Istanbul is pure magic, Cappadocia is mesmerizing, and the coast is breathtakingly beautiful. There is so much history, so much beauty and the Turkish people are absolutely incredible. I can’t compare it to Egypt, having never been, but I can give Turkey a heartfelt endorsement.
