Things I love today: Champagne saucers

Champagne saucers pretty much lost the popularity contest against champagne flutes over the past decades. But I still love them. It’s similar to my dedication to tea cups and saucers instead of mugs. I’m solidly pro-saucer!

There is something so very “Philadelphia Story” about drinking champagne from a wide saucer. Plus, you don’t have to hold the glass almost upside down to drink that last sip, very un-lady like! They say that flutes are better for keeping champagne carbonated, but who is leaving their champagne around this long anyway? And you can use champagne saucers to serve desert or to put out candies at a party.

And here’s a little history lesson: A champagne saucer is also called a “coupe.” The Victorians designated this shape of glass as ideal for champagne. The design is rumored to be modeled on either Helen of Troy or Marie Antoinette’s breasts.

It is possible to buy saucers still today. Bed, Bath and Beyond has a few, but 10 ounces seems like an awful lot of champagne. These Stork Club champagne saucers are much more classic and a lot like my set. If you want to go vintage, this bohemian set is nice. You can also search for “sherbet glasses” for a similar style.

PS: I know, I said I am taking champagne flutes to Yosemite. It’s true…I own two sets of vintage champagne glasses. I am odd!
