I'm throwing a 70's themed baby shower this Saturday. Amber…
I can’t be the only one who thinks this is a bit mad
Sunset Magazine currently has an article about a woman in Berkeley who throws soup parties at her house. Sounds all fine and good doesn’t it? What a clever idea, you think to yourself.
And then you read closer and you see that it is a standing monthly invitation…with no RSVP required…to which over 80 people are invited…resulting in 25-40 people each time! That is five gallons of soup!
This seems like utter lunacy to me. I would have a nervous breakdown if I had to make gallons of soup the first Wednesday of each month for a group of people that could turn out to be either 5 or 85 in total.
What do you think? Enlightened hostessing or insanity?

Sounds vaguely familiar
Utter, utter lunacy. Although perhaps if it is her own social event for the entire month? If that was the case I guess maybe it evens out… No, not really. 😉
I have a stunned admiration for your own hostessing. I throw a party maybe twice a year and it nearly kills me everytime. When I am invited to something at someone’s home, I take it as the kindest act of friendship, graciousness and benevolence and try my best to attend. To be invited is a wonderful gift. This lady must be generous beyond belief, but her lifestyle would kill me.
It’s actually not too bad, especially when it’s an easy-to-assemble dish like soup whose leftovers can be frozen. I throw two parties like that every year, one during the summer (picnic foods) and one during the holidays (desserts). I invite about 150 people each, over the course of 3-4 hours, no RSVPs required. It’s been 3 years now, and I get anywhere from 50-80 people to each one. It’s a lot of fun actually!
Crazy, but I find myself in this situation quite often. I just hate leaving people out, so I end up with out of control parties and no idea how many will actaully show up. It is crazy.
