What to Wear: Skinny Minnie
News flash: shopping is hard, no matter what your size. Here is Stacy’s request:
I am writing you today in hopes of getting some style advice. I have two problems. First, I am a fashion tragedy. Second, I have a small and straight frame for my height (5’7″ wearing a size 0 or XS). And to complain is simply a no-no (even though I know it’s not my problem, my friends and colleagues who are bigger than me get quite upset at my complaints and it just makes me feel bad).
I feel as if I am a fashion tragedy because it is difficult to shop for clothes that make me look sophisticated, professional, and sexy (after all, I am 32). I find myself in the juniors section of department stores or other specialty stores that cater to the teen crowd because they seem to carry the sizes I can wear and I end up looking like they do… a teen.
My lifestyle is a mix of active and casual. I live in Colorado, so we get 4 seasons, which means a wardrobe catering to all. I attend college part-time and work in recreation and rehabilitation services, which often requires me to work in hospitals, client’s homes (on the floor) or recreation facilities. The outfit that would be most helpful for me is non-formal evening wear (what one would wear out for dinner, a show or a few quiet drinks with friends).
Say goodbye to the teen department for good and start shopping at places where you know you’ll get a good fit. Club Monaco, BCBG, La Redoute, FCUK, J.Crew and H&M all have good offerings for slender types. More mainstream brands (Old Navy, Target, etc) tend to run bigger but can still work if you know what you’re looking for. Here’s an outfit for a night on the town.
Skirt – A perfectly fitted black pencil skirt can create just the right curves on anyone. Invest in this piece.
Top – It is easy for you to play with volume because you’re thin. This pink and black cowl-neck top goes from day to night easily. (click through to page 3 of the lookbook)
Pumps – A classic peep-toe pair in patent leather.
Blazer – Cropped and retro in charcoal gray from La Redoute.
Clutch – A crocodile wallet is great for the evening.
Bangle – Rock those toothpick arms with style!
Wear your hair up, put on some bright lipstick and feel good about your enviable figure!
