It is big news that Mark Bittman from The New…
To Do: Wear Sunblock
I am sulking. A small mark on my wrist was checked out and returned from the lab as “atypical pathology.” Luckily, it’s just a pre-cancer and was caught early. Unluckily, this means stitches next week and a big scar thanks to my dermatologist.
I like my skin and my wrist. I don’t want either to be cut into. And this will be my first time with stitches.
Browsing expensive bracelets to cover the scar helps a bit (the lovely platinum bow bracelet pictured is $16k – this antique gold bangle is $135). Asking you all to wear ample amounts of sunblock every day helps even more.

bummer, emily! i can definitely sympathize with your fair skin and close relationship with your dermo. mine always makes some remark about my whiteness! 🙂 cheer up, it will be fine. here's another pretty bracelet.
I'm with you Emily! I had a spot on my left forearm that came back "severely displastic" and now have an icky scar.
Skin cancer runs rampant in my family. It's that pale, Scotch-Irish-English skin, I guess!
Ick. Make sure you put LOTS of sunscreen on the scar and that will help to minimize its appearance. I made the mistake of not putting enough on one after an accident & it doesn't blend in all that well. Good luck!
You'll be fine! I am glad they caught it early… You've had a run of things happen lately. 🙁
Keep your head hi! And good luck with the procedure next week. When you are healing try things like cocobutter, aloe and mederma. They help cure/minimize scarring.
Blessings girl!
Also try rosehip seed oil, supposed to be good for scars (rosa mosqueta). Glad it was caught early.
I'm sorry. My derm took one freckle off my leg last summer. Fortunately, that came back normal. Unfortunately, she's taking another one off next month. Boo. I totally hear you on sunscreen.
I keep telling everyone that pale is the new tan. And let me tell you, I am PALE.
Eeek. I've got a little scar on my back from the derm digging around to make sure it wasn't cancer. Yet I still need this reminder–thank you!
Stay healthy:)
Yuck! Good for you for getting it checked out. And thanks for the reminder. I'm religious about sunscreen on my face, but I definitely let it slide elsewhere.
Glad to hear the news. Make sure you wear the RIGHT sunscreen though–sunscreens are notorious for having estrogenic and other toxic chemicals. Here's a great guide: http://www.ewg.org/whichsunscreensarebest/2009report
I feel you. i have a lovely scar right on my shoulder from the stiches. i really liked my shoulders!
What a lovely bracelet! I love delicate jewelry.
If the thought of a scar is really bothering you, consider visiting a plastic surgeon instead. Lesions removed by dermatologists are pretty notorious for scarring, but a plastics person will take the time to do a super-fine resection.
The downside: they charge a pretty penny.
just a quick note about something that might help keep the scar from becoming too ugly.
i had stitches under my eye and used olive oil (via a referal from a friend) once I was able to and I now have no visable scar.
So yes, I am now a firm believer in olive oil!
I personally don't think scars are ugly! They tell stories and you should be proud to have them! (This is coming from a girl with a heart surgery scar down the middle of her chest. Try covering that up without wearing a turtleneck or something!)
Jeez, Em, I'm sorry to hear about this. But I think you should make up an awesome story about the scar. From a country music song:
Scars
Every one tells a story
A tall tale of glory
And somehow you survived.
That's an amazing scar, a battle scar Jenny! Mine is just a mark reminding me to wear sunblock 😉
