This was a mellow weekend; a much needed break after…
Sedona, Arizona?
We’ve added a couple days in Northern Arizona to the honeymoon itinerary. It looks like there are loads of nice places to stay in Sedona but it is hard to get a good read online. Have you been before? Resort recommendations? Tips?

..never been there, but it looks beautiful. 🙂
I have been there, but didn’t stay the night. It’s beautiful, but in my opinion, extra days hiking at the Grand Canyon are much more worth it… it’s indescribable!
Have been to Sedona numerous times. L’Auberge de Sedona is a beautiful and very romantic property situated on Oak Creek. Another, likely less expensive, option is the Garlands.
I’d recommend spending a day in Sedona, but driving to Flagstaff for the evening (and then heading to the Grand Canyon). Sedona is sweet, but there’s not that much to do there, and Flagstaff is a really cute small college town.
We have a couple days in the Grand Canyon and Havasu Falls on the schedule, too. Any suggestions for where to stay in Flagstaff? It can be a pricey place, this is our last big hotel stop before more camping.
As a kid, I spent three summers in Flagstaff while my parents were getting their master’s degrees. While I haven’t been back in almost 20 years, I highly recommend Oak Creek Canyon and Slide Rock State Park! You can swim at Slide Rock, so bring your suit! Like the other readers said, Sedona is beautiful… but I’ve heard its become very commercialized.
I grew up in Jerome, a small mining town turned artist community about twenty minutes away from Sedona. I would recommend staying at L’Auberge in Sedona. It is like an oasis in the desert and so romantic. Then take Highway 89A through oak creek canyon up to Flagstaff the next day. Its a beautiful drive, much better than the freeway.
I thought Sedona was pretty but wouldn’t recommend more than few hours there. Didn’t seem like a whole lot to do, unless you’re really want to get in touch with your vodoo-vortex side.
My dad owns some property in Oak Creek and it is divine. Several quaint cabins right along that red rock and across the street from a rushing stream for plenty of fly-fishing and nature hiking. It’s so beautiful there! Definitely go.
If you make it a little further north, there is an incredible place just outside of page called Antelope Canyon. It is breathtaking any time of day.

Another amazing place about 3 hrs north of Flagstaff is Canyon de Chelly. I recommend going in to the canyon with a Navajo guide- they can arrange hiking tours or jeep/hiking tours. Really beautiful, and more accessible than the grand canyon.
I lived in that area for 2 years. There is a lot of open space between Flagstaff and Chinle, but if you are going in that direction, or going the direction towards Page, AZ, these are great places to visit.
I haven’t stayed there, but I’ve heard the Hotel Monte Vista in Flagstaff is funky/cool. I stayed at the Hilton, which wasn’t exciting, but within my price range at the time. And yes, the drive on 89 b/w Sedona and Flagstaff is awe-inspiring amazing–you must do it during the day/late afternoon to appreciate it, and give yourself time to stop and gawk. That drive is one of my favorite memories from a roadtrip last summer.
Never stayed, but I’ve driven through it. I’m convinced its one of the loveliest places on the planet.
It is a beautiful place and you should take some time to explore. I recommend Bell Rock. HOWEVER the night life was non-existant. There was nothing to do and most of the places were closed. Spend the day there, and move on.
I grew up in Flagstaff and used to make weekly trips to Sedona. It’s literally my favorite place on earth..I would move back in a heart beat if I could… I would recommend staying at (1)Enchantment Resort-Sedona (2)L’Auberge De Sedona Resort or (3)Los Abrigados Resort. They are all beautiful places!!! There is also the Tlaquepaque Village…which has great shops to walk around in and great places to eat as well. If you like Mexican food, I would have to recommend going to the Javelina Cantina. It’s so so good!! If you take 89A up to Flagstaff…its a beautiful…lots of traffic in the summer, but well worth it in the end!!! Flagstaff also has some great places to eat and stay…if you need any information, please feel free to email me [email protected]..i will be happy help. Best wishes and congratulations…btw I love reading your blog!!
I am a born and raised Nothern Arizona native living in DC.
There is this cabin right at the base of where the picture in your post was taken. My family and I had a fun retreat there last year and I loved it.
My dad also has a gallery in Sedona.
Ohh, I have to email you for more information.
Hi MissEM! Daily reader of your blog, and I live in Flagstaff, Arizona and have for the last 20+ years. Sedona is lovely, but you will find less expensive places to sleep in Flagstaff, and nighttime in Sedona isn’t as lively as Flagstaff. Please feel free to drop me an email at audra at blairworldwide dot com and I will gladly share with you all that you should see and do. Audra
I love the Amara Spa & Resort. Any resort up there is pertty cute. I hear there is a new boutique hotel/spa called Sedona Rouge, if you want to check it out
I’ve heard that England House Bed & Breakfast is great. I can’t tell much from their website (http://www.englandhousebandb.com/) but the source I heard it from it pretty reputable (owns a fantastic papery store in downtown Mesa.)
