Things I Love Today: Summertime!
Last weekend brought out so many great summertime memories and traditions. It’s starting to really feel like summer thanks to the following:
- Watching I Love Lucy in my pajamas, especially the episodes where they visit Hollywood. This used to be a tradition with my sister and cousin when we vacationed in Montecito. They only get funnier each time!
- Cheesy summertime promotions and shows. I love the annual testing of new soda flavors and terrible television programs like “America’s Got Talent.”
- Catalogs full of people at the beach. J. Crew took it to a new level with their little vacation video clip. Never mind that no one goes to the tropics in June (being that it is 193 degrees this time of year). I still like the concept.
- Corona with lime. Fish tacos. Cantaloupe. Potato salad. Apricots. Turkey subs with lots of vinegar and pickles. Iced coffee. Coconut popsicles. Ice tea with mint. Fresh basil. Bacon and avocado sandwiches.
- Cold foggy mornings that burn off to reveal sunny days.
Ah, summer! What officially signals the start of summer for you?

Allergies? It’s been a rough week up in the Northeast, but still can’t take away from the fact that it’s summer! For me, it’s planting tomatoes, shelling peas while lounging under the shade tree, and the smell of peppers roasting on the grill….
Haying! I try to go up to my brother-in-law’s ranch in Steamboat Springs during the summer to make circles in the hay with the tractor and rake. I’m not the best ranch hand you’ll ever meet, but I’m certainly entertaining!
mmm… coconut popsicles?! they sound awesome!
BBQ’s, cherries, mowing the lawn, sunscreen, and lots of lemonade!
Getting out my cute Target lawn chairs… picnics in the park. Swimming lessons, art classes, gardening. Having my sweet daughter around lots more. Love that. 🙂
Emily — your post really cheered me up. So far our summer has meant rain and bored children indoors (ugh!). We went to the library today, though, and they are excited about winning prizes in the Summer Reading Program. So we’re on our way…
Kerry — they do make coconut popsicles! Dreyer’s/Edy’s has good ones. The best things EVER are the rum raisin popsicles from Helados Mexico, an outfit in Chino, CA with nationwide distribution. Here is their website.
The smell of jasmine, camping and stopping at the roadside fruit stand for their latest treats. I Love Lucy re-runs are the greatest, aren’t they?!
the smell of flowers and fresh cut grass.
