Recipe: Plum Ice Milk

Rob came back from Fresno last weekend with two big bags of apricots and plums. Considering that they’re selling for a dollar a piece at the Ferry Building, this was a real treasure. After getting home last night and washing off the pancake makeup, I took on the remaining plums. 2/3rds were cut, blended and mixed with sugar and vanilla to make into a sorbet next week.

The other third went into an impromptu ice cream with ingredients I had on hand. Technically, I think this is an “ice milk” not an “ice cream.” But that’s fine with me since I’m off cream for a while from the butter experiment. The final result was bubblegum pink, light and a little tart…just perfect!

Plum Ice Milk

1 pint of milk
1/2 cup of sugar (or more to taste)
Teaspoon of vanilla
4 or 5 ripe plums cut into 1/4 pieces

Mix the ingredients together in a bowl and add sugar to taste. Pour into an ice cream maker and let it run for about 20 minutes. Keep an eye on the mixture as the plum chunks can get stuck now and then. Watch it turn from white to pink. Put in the freezer to harden for an hour. Enjoy!
