Tweed Ride
Last night’s Tweed Ride was amazing! One of those magical San Francisco nights that reminds you why you pay expensive rents and put up with the cold. What a great way to cap what has been a very fun month.
My friend Margaret drove up from San Mateo to meet us at work. She had picked out a great outfit with black and red plaid and even wore knickers! We rode down to Union Square to meet up with the rest of the tweed riders. Everyone was dressed to the nines and had accessories like hats, pipes, sock garters, picnic baskets, bow ties and vintage glasses. I was in tweedy-heaven.
We amassed about forty riders at Union Square and picked up a few more from the East Bay down at Market Street. With a “tally-ho” cheer, we all rode down Market to the Ferry Building – getting a lot of attention from tourists and locals along the way:
We rode all the way down from the Ferry Building to Aquatic Park. And then down to the end of the pier that protects that tiny bay. The Tweed Ride organizer had set it up so that a band met us at our final destination as a surprise. The lead singer summed up the night, saying: “I know that this event is all about your clothes…but I can’t get over how amazing all your clothes are!” We listened to the band play a few songs as the sun set and finished the night with a sing-along:
Margaret, Rob and I rode back home through the empty city – it’s so dramatic with all the building windows glowing downtown. It started to drizzle right as we finished the ride. Click here to see more photos from the Tweed Ride and the rest of this crazy April.

That looks like an absolute blast. Maybe a new tradition?
They’re going to do a tweedy summer picnic in the park next…can’t wait
It looks like you had a lot of fun. I love the last pic. I could have been taken 60 years ago, when you look at the clothes…
margaret looks so cute!
Did you get to take a picture of yourself all tweeded? I’d love to participate next time–what a fun way to ride in the city!
You can see me – in a bright red coat – here. My outfit wasn’t as cute as some of the others.
How fantastic is that! Nice photos of the city too!
