Memphis: Long Weekend Itenerary
At one point during our trip, a somewhat stern, incredulous, elegant southern woman told us that the Mississippi River is “not for leisure!” This became a bit of a battle cry for our vacation in Memphis. In classic Rob and Emily style, we managed to cram it all in.
So, before I get to all our favorite places and things in detail, a quick run down of our schedule:
Friday:
- Land, meet Shane and pick up the rental car
- Check into our hotel across from Graceland
- Drive around Whitehaven loading up on libations, groceries and fried chicken
- Party like rockstars in our hotel while watching cheesy Elvis movies.
Saturday:
- Breakfast at the hotel
- 9:45 platinum tour of Graceland
- Leave Graceland three hours later
- Amazing lunch at Bar-B-Q Shop
- Over to Mud Island to explore the very cool river model
- Drive across the Mississippi River to touch Arkansas
- Ice cream down by Beale Street
- Stumble in exactly at the right time to see the ducks exit the fountain at The Peabody
- Back to the hotel to change
- Out to Collierville for the roller derby championship.
- Jackie wins the halftime hula hoop contest
- Women of Mass Destruction take home the trophy!
- Party at the hotel room to celebrate
Sunday
- Breakfast at the hotel
- To Sun Studios to tour the famous recording shop
- To Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken to go crazy with lunch
- Foiled visit to an underground railroad house
- To the piggly wiggy for supplies
- Back to the hotel to swim, read and nap for a few hours
- Head to midtown for an early dinner at Soul Fish Cafe
- Walk around the cute midtown neighborhood and look at the cats
- Over to the Hi-Tone, but drats – too early
- Follow the sound of music in Overton Park to catch Piano in the Park for a few minutes
- Goof around at the Brooks Museum of Art
- Back downtown to Beale Street for a stroll
- Up to Main Street for the Music and Heritage Festival
- 11 year old girl drummer – wow!
- After party in the hotel room
Monday
- Breakfast, packing, check-out
- Leave our mark on the gate at Graceland
- To South Main Street for one last lunch
- What?! A loft in Memphis costs less than $200k?
- Classic diner fare at the Arcade Restaurant
- Drop off Shane
- Drop of the beloved rental car
- Long flight home
