Wedding Wednesday: Music

This last little bit of wedding planning is driving me nuts! It seems that for every one decision I make, three more questions pop-up. The latest was the choice of wedding music for our ceremony.

I chose traditional songs for our amazing pianist friend to play: Cannon in D Major for the processional, Bridal Chorus from Lohengrin for my entrance and the Wedding March for the exit.

All that remains is to pick a song for him to play and his wife to sing during the ceremony. I’m drawing a total blank. All the romantic songs I like are goofy jazz standards, like I Can’t Give you Anything But Love and It’s De-Lovely. Any suggestions?

    I agree with Sara. Do what you like – goofy is good.

    I didn’t really have a wedding song, but if I could do it again, I’d use “When I Fall in Love”. I love that song, and with simple piano accompaniment it sounds so classic.

    I just sang “The Nearness of You” at a wedding last weekend. I love the lyrics and thought it was a great choice on the bride and groom’s part.

    I walked down the aisle to Eva Cassidy’s version of Songbird. I think every one of our guests told us it was the most romantic song ever.

    I agree with Sara – if you like it, go for it. You want to hear goofy? We had “The Kiss at the End of the Rainbow” from A Mighty Wind (the Christopher Guest folk music mockumentary). We thought it was hilarious because it’s such a ridiculous song, but since it was an instrumental (uncle on guitar, sister playing the flute), anyone who wasn’t in the know would just think “Oh, that’s pretty.” It was like our little joke in the middle of our wedding ceremony.

    I think “Because of You”, old school Tony Bennett, is a really sweet and romantic song. And think it’s such a great idea to include a romantic song in the ceremony!

    I agree with Sara on “Bei Mir Bist Du Shon”…and I’ll add a little “The Way You Look Tonight” and “They Can’t Take That Away From Me.”

    It’s fairly traditional, but you can’t go wrong with Gershwin 😉

    my sister in law sang, ‘fever’, ‘two of us’ from the beatles, and ‘give a little bit’ by supertramp.
    i loved all three equally. the supertramp song was a surprise from my husband.

    good luck with the final little details.

    Yeah, go with what you like–people will be charmed that it’s something different from the usual hymn (or whatever) and it will be a song you always listen to with new delight afterwards. We had all classical at the ceremony (my husband plays classical trumpet and jazz/standards on the piano) and all standards at the reception.
    From This Moment On (Cole Porter, NOT Shania Twain!!) has really great, fun, wedding-appropriate lyrics…

    We had a singer do La Vie En Rose and I’ve Got a Crush on You.

    Two of my favorite songs that you may borrow if you like.

    “True Love Ways” by Buddy Holly is romantic and retro.

    La Vie En Rose is a wonderful option. It’s also hard to go wrong with Gershwin, in my opinion. We had our friend perform “Grow Old With Me” by John Lennon as our interlude. We used “I Could Write a Book” from When Harry met Sally for our first dance, it’s not terribly long which is a plus if you don’t want something that will take too much time.

    Your song choices sound lovely; however, I would suggest an alternative to the Canon in D, although that isn´t what you asked. I´m a proponent of non-overplayed classical music pieces, and I am positive you could find something much nicer. For example, I´ve always thought that Debussy´s Clair de Lune would be lovely for a wedding, although untraditional. It´s actually meant for keyboard, so I think it would sound better. Apologies for the unsolicited advice, I´m sure whatever you go with will end up perfect!

    we danced to “Come Rain or Shine” sung by Ray Charles..to me its the perfect wedding song

    Being only 23 years old I haven’t given much thought to my own wedding and what it would be like.
    However, the music is one exception. Did you ever watch “I Love Lucy”? On the series finale, a woman sang “That’s All”. It will be the song I dance to.

    i think “true companion” by Marc Cohn has the most romantic lyrics in all of love song-ville. it got overdone a few years ago but i think it’s ok again.
