Desk Alternatives?
The dinning room in our apartment serves a double duty as dining area and office. We have a huge teak desk from Cost Plus in the corner with our computer on it. The trouble is that the desk and the table are too similar and compete for dominance in the room. Rob and I have considered all kinds of solutions but haven’t settled on anything perfect yet.
One idea that emerged was using this lacquered console table (there was one half off at the Gump’s store last weekend) as a high desk and pairing it with a fancy stool. That way, the desk would take up less room and be completely different from the dining area furniture.
Of course, that table and stool are not cheap. A better alternative might be to find a lacquered console tables in Chinatown instead. And we do happen to live near “House of Stools & Bars” that claims the largest selection in the west and would likely have better prices than DWR. Hmm, this is starting to sound like a good weekend project!

I had a similar problem when I lived in a small place in the city. I purchased an office armoire, which I still use. I love that I can make a mess and close the whole thing up until my project is finished. They come in lots of sizes and some have file drawers, shelves… and etc.
that table is beautiful! (i love brown and blue, we had them as wedding colors 🙂
An office armoire is a great idea, I know IKEA even has some cheap-ish ones, you could always customize it all fancy with wallpaper like Jordan blogged about. And its great that you can close the doors.
I like the clear side table that CB2 has, not sure if that would be big enough.
