Ladies Activity Club: Spherification

Ladies Activity Club: Spherification

The Ladies Activity Club was hosted last night by Yvonne and her sister at my apartment. For our activity this month, we decorated bowls and glasses first and then experimented with molecular gastronomy.

Food
Our hosts prepared a feast of cupcakes with fondant flowers, meatballs, colorful sushi, button cookies and buffalo wing bites.

Drinks
Orangina, soda and champagne (that I got to saber!)

Dish Activity
To start, we decorated bowls or martini glasses. Our hostesses brought paint pens, ice pens, glitter and this fancy almost-like-contact-paper stuff called Color Decor from Germany. All you have to do is decorate and then bake to set the design. Everyone’s ideas were so creative!

Spherification Activity
Our experiment with molecular gastronomy involved “spherification.” Basically, making a liquid into a ball with the use of chemistry. For this, we mixed two different kinds of soda and champagne with algin. After it cools, you drop it in a bath of a calcium chloride and water. Here’s demo on YouTube. We made small “caviar” out of the soda and embedded raspberries in the champagne mixture. Pretty cool!

I had no idea you could do spherification at home! How cool. I’m going to go check out that video.

I love watching them do that on the food network!! Where did they get all the stuff to do it?

Be careful with that sabering! You have pretty important plans this weekend and you don’t want to have to make another cute sling, do you? Or wear a cast on your left hand?
