Modern Art at Lisbon’s Museu Coleção Berardo

Technically, the Museu Coleção Berardo is in Belem, a suburb of Lisbon. It’s a giant building just 10 years old – constructed with future expansion in mind. And – importantly for mid June in Portugal – it is air conditioned! It seems like every train, light rail and bus from the heart of Lisbon takes you to Belem in about 15 minutes.

Margaret, Lucy and I loved walking around the exhibits. The scale of the museum made it feel like we mostly had it to ourselves. Very nicely organized collection showing the influence of different artist groups through modern art history.

Note that the museum doesn’t have a cafe though – just a coffee vending machine – and you’re not allowed re-entry on your ticket. So plan ahead to eat before or after.

Lucy was just starting to really get into her pointing and she loved this museum for excellent pointing opportunities.

For lunch after, I recommend popping across the street to the Maritime Museum which has a nice cafeteria with reasonably priced local comfort food (and really amazing chocolate cake). They also have a great gift shop there and a shady park where the baby can run around.

I don’t know what I am enjoying more: seeing Europe through your eyes or seeing Lucy growing. She is adorable!
