Jane Austen Style
Miss Austen Regrets: I went into it with low expectations and was still disappointed. It just felt to me like a PSA against the dangers of being a successful woman; very “This is your life on intellect.”
As much as I didn’t like the film, some of the visuals and costumes were lovely. It would be worth watching with the volume on mute.
The niece’s wedding scene was especially nice. I really love the simplicity of the Regency-style weddings in Jane Austen films. All you need is a pretty white dress, soft curly hair, a small bouquet and some wildflowers.
PS: I’ll be back on Thursday!

I definitely didn’t walk away uplifted. But I did feel appreciation that I live in a time that shows acceptance of a woman with intellect, talent, and ambition, rather than punishing her for it. Imagine how many thousands of brilliant, inspiring women were lost to the ages because of the constraints of their time? Anyway, it just made me that much more impressed with Jane Austen and other women who were able to withstand the incredible pressures to conform and paid the price for their art.
I agree with the review you linked to and Marian as well. She was like all of us in a way because there were desperate things that she felt were unfair about society and government, but the joy and fun she felt in life comes through in her work as well, but other than the dancing scenes.. you just don’t feel it in that film. Dour is the word that comes to mind.
Wow. That Jane Austen blog was interesting. I just finished a book called Austenland by Shannon Hale. What a disappointment. The obsession with Jane Austen, and her beloved characters was not enough to cover the bad writing style.
I have yet to finish the movie…still sitting on my DVR half-way done. perhaps I won’t bother with the rest…thanks for the review! 🙂
