Weekend Round-Up: The SLO Life

Weekend Round-Up: The SLO Life

I feel like I’ve been away for ages! Long weekends are so nice 🙂

On Thursday, my sister and I left for San Luis Obispo around 4:30. On the way down, you could see the huge smoke cloud from the Big Sur fire. We arrived at 9:30 and caught up with my mom and niece over a bowl of guacamole.

Jean left early Friday morning for bridesmaid activities for her friend’s wedding. We walked the dog and played Taboo most of the morning. At lunch, mom, my 13-year old niece and I went downtown and watched Kit Kittredge downtown (So cute!). We got back home in time to prepare for a 4th of July BBQ at the house. The neighbors came over at 6:00 and we feasted on steak, chicken, potato salad, garlic bread and fruit salad.

At 7:30, we drove out to Morro Bay with the plan to take the boat out to see fireworks. Unfortunately, there was thick, pea-soup fog over the whole coast. We had berry shortcake and coffee on the docked boat instead. Afterward, we walked up to the science museum to see the show. It was pink and green clouds for the first few minutes. Fortunately, the fog burned off and we had a clear view of the rest.

My niece left for Texas early Saturday morning. We left a little later to go to farmer’s market and breakfast at Budget Cafe. Fully stuffed, we helped Jean prep for the wedding. I gave her an updo and did her make-up. She left at 11:30 and mom and I went to the grocery store. At 2:00, my parents left for the same wedding.

That evening, my friend from high school, Shane, came to pick me up for dinner. We ate at Big Sky, one of my favorite restaurants. We grabbed a drink at Black Sheep and ran into eight girls from our high school class (my head did not explode, progress). At 9:45, we went to see Hancock (worth renting).

Sunday morning, we lazed about all morning with waffles and fruit. Jean’s task was to clean out her childhood bedroom, which included unearthing all sorts of old photos and memories. What a task! We had Mexican food for lunch and a quick stop at Foster’s Freeze on the way home. Everyone read the Sunday paper in the afternoon and I had another long nap. We had a nice dinner of halibut and snap peas.

I slept in on Monday morning and pretty quickly had to get dressed for the shower. My aunt arrived from Santa Barbara and we picked up my 90-year old cousin before driving to the party in Shell Beach. I’ll do a separate post today about the shower. It was such a lovely event!

Jean and I drove back to San Francisco at 4:30 in the thick smoke. I started to run out of gas right when we got on the 280, which notoriously has no gas stations. We found one in a ritzy neighborhood, filled up the tank, put some air in the tires, and drove off…..only to see my wallet go flying off onto the freeway! I had stupidly put it on the roof and forgotten about it. We turned around to see if we could find it with little hope for the four lane highway. Amazingly, we found it in perfect condition on the side of the road. How lucky! I should buy a lottery ticket.

I dropped Jean off at the airport on time and came home to an unseasonably warm San Francisco. Rob had purchased a new tent for our honeymoon and had it up in the dining room. We spent the evening inside the tent catching up about our weekends apart. It’s nice to be home! You can see all my photos here.

Awesome! It’s an identical setup to our Kelty, which we love.

The same one by the way, which all four of us crammed into with only 3 sleeping bags one cold valentines day weekend in Yosemite.

    Perfect for your road trip.

Are you from SLO?! I am, and haven’t been back in a couple months, I miss it terribly! It was so nice to read your post and know exactly everything you were talking about 🙂

Time for another road trip home I suppose.
